Mount Timpanogos, August 1999

I took an opportunity in August of 1999 to hike up a minor peak that towers over the Utah Valley just north and east of Provo. Mount Timpanogos can be done in one long day, but I chose to camp for one night about 2/3 of the way up to the summit.

The weather during this hike was mostly cloudy with some rain. Fortunately on the morning I went to the summit the weather cleared enough for some nice views. On the way up I encountered a herd of mountain goats who seemed to care little when I tramped through the patches of snow and rocks where they were busy foraging.

On the way down, however, I enjoyed the view so much that I missed a turn and got off-trail. I was consequently forced to scramble down a steep and nasty cliff of crumbling rock that that terminated in a field of scree, where I encountered the bones of a dead goat and the crash debris from an air force jet. Rather creepy, but also rather pretty among the wildflowers (see below).
