Mexico, March 1989

Now here is an old set of photos... This is from a trip that Satomi and took with our friends Steve and Susan way back in 1989, a few months before we were married. Steve and Susan were living in Oakland at the time, and had met Satomi perhaps once (or perhaps never?) before this trip. Steve and I made rather loose plans for the trip, which involved a flight to Mexico City, two nights there, then an overnight train to Oaxaca where we spent a few days enjoying the town and the nearby Monte Alban ruins. Oaxaca was a wonderful town, a state capitol with a thriving market, arts scene and very few tourists.

These pictures are scanned from prints...

Geez, I look younger in that picture... but Satomi looks exactly the same... no fair!

Dining car, on the night train to Ciudad Mexico

(This was a most interesting meal... The dining car was a classic, apparently purchased from the Great Northern Railway. The cartoonish graphics on the wall depicted the Lewis and Clark trail, and the decor was very 1950s. The cook was burning the steaks in the kitchen, filling the car with smoke. We drank our Tecates from cans and laughed while we cried.)
